Turning things around

So here we are… I’m now past my 40th birthday (this summer) and I need to make some changes. I’ve tried to take a close look at myself and my habits and decide what what matters to me. I want to improve my chances of living to a ripe old age. I want to be less tired and I want to feel comfortable in my own skin. My wish list of changes is enormous, however I think to start with I’m going to focus on one thing: Lose weight – get healthier

What can I do to achieve this? Well, taking it step by step is probably a good start!

Lose weight

I’ve spent a lot of time over the last 2 years looking at this and trying to figure out the best way forward. But guess what – it didn’t really go anywhere. I built up a streak in myfitnesspal of over 365 days but never lost anything much ( 1 stone in total but more through luck than judgement).

The key point here is that I was trying but not really motivated, I’m not sure I really wanted to. I could always start next week, well guess what! After over 52 weeks I’m not trying anymore. I am doing.

There are two sides to this:

  1. Nutrition – eat the right things for me to lose weight. This is not as easy as it sounds, I have some ideas that I’ll cover in the next few weeks but the real test is trying a few different things. My first step is: No alcohol
  2. Exercise – given my size and time commitments this is something I have had a lot of trouble with in the past. However, I’ve made the first steps, joined a gym – induction Tuesday, and started exercising independently. Why both? Well, I need weights, and, although I do have some at home they are not heavy enough. I could I buy more, but there is always the risk of injury and I hope the gym will give that. However, I can do flexibility and basic exercises at home and they give me that extra mental boost to keep going.
